Pacific Rim: Uprising - A Sequel That Fails to Live Up to Its Predecessor
Pacific Rim: Uprising is a 2018 science fiction action film that is a sequel to the 2013 film Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film follows Jake Pentecost, the son of the late hero Stacker Pentecost, who joins a new generation of Jaeger pilots to fight against a new threat of giant monsters called Kaiju. The film stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi.
The film was directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who replaced del Toro due to his commitment to The Shape of Water (2017), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. DeKnight also co-wrote the screenplay with Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin. The film was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Universal Pictures.
Pacific Rim: Uprising received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, who praised the visual effects and action sequences, but criticized the thin plot, bland characters, and lack of originality. The film grossed $290 million worldwide against a budget of $150 million, making it a box office disappointment. The film was also nominated for six Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, Worst Screen Combo (for any two characters or actors), and Worst Supporting Actor (for Charlie Day).

Pacific Rim: Uprising is set ten years after the events of the first film, in which humanity defeated the Kaiju invasion by closing the portal that connected their world to ours. The world has been rebuilding and recovering from the war, but some people still scavenge and sell Jaeger parts on the black market. Jake Pentecost, a former Jaeger pilot and the son of Stacker Pentecost, is one of them. He lives in a coastal mansion in Santa Monica, where he meets Amara Namani, a teenage hacker who has built her own mini-Jaeger named Scrapper.
Jake and Amara are arrested by the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC), the organization that operates the Jaegers. Jake's adoptive sister, Mako Mori, who is now a high-ranking official in the PPDC, offers him a deal: he can either join the PPDC as an instructor for the new cadets, or face prison. Jake reluctantly agrees, and takes Amara with him as his recruit. They are assigned to the Shatterdome in China, where they meet Nate Lambert, Jake's former co-pilot and rival, and Jules Reyes, a fellow instructor and Nate's lover.
Meanwhile, Dr. Newton Geiszler, who helped stop the Kaiju invasion by drifting with a Kaiju brain in the first film, is now working for Shao Industries, a Chinese corporation that is developing drone Jaegers that can be remotely controlled without human pilots. Newton is secretly corrupted by the Precursors, the alien race that created the Kaiju, and uses his access to Shao's technology to reopen the portal and unleash a new wave of Kaiju. He also sabotages the drone Jaegers, making them turn against their human allies.
Mako is killed in an attack by a rogue drone Jaeger while trying to warn Jake about Newton's betrayal. Jake and Nate decide to avenge her death by leading a team of cadets and Jaegers to stop Newton and the Kaiju. They are joined by Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, Newton's former colleague and friend, who has discovered Newton's connection to the Precursors. They also receive help from Liwen Shao, the CEO of Shao Industries, who regrets her involvement in the drone project.
The final battle takes place in Tokyo, where Newton has merged three Kaiju into one mega-Kaiju that is capable of destroying Mount Fuji and triggering a volcanic eruption that would wipe out humanity. Jake and Nate pilot Gypsy Avenger, the most advanced Jaeger, and use its gravity sling to launch a nuclear bomb into the mega-Kaiju's mouth. The bomb detonates and kills the mega-Kaiju, but also damages Gypsy Avenger. Jake and Nate eject from their cockpit before it crashes into Mount Fuji.
The film ends with Jake giving a speech to honor Mako and the other fallen heroes of the war. He also declares that humanity will not wait for another attack from the Precursors, but will take the fight to them. He rallies the surviving Jaeger pilots and cadets for a possible sequel. aa16f39245
